Jakarta, Social Media News – Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has been re-elected as Director General (Dirjen) of the World Health Organization (WHO).
WHO members re-entrust the position for the next five years to Tedros in a vote on Tuesday (24/5).
AFP reported that the results were announced by Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh from Djibouti at the big annual meeting. The announcement was seen as a formality event as Tedros was the only candidate running.
“I am truly grateful for this support,” Tedros told the assembly after being re-elected.
“This recognition is not just for me. I believe it is an acknowledgment for the whole WHO family. I am very proud to be WHO,” he said.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was the first African to head the WHO and has now been re-elected. He is now increasingly recognized by the world for spearheading the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The former Ethiopian minister of health and foreign affairs has also frequently responded to conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine that had an impact on global health.
“More than a pandemic, war shakes and destroys the foundations on which previously stable societies stood,” Tedros said.
“And it leaves psychological scars that can take years or decades to heal,” he says.
During the re-election announcement, ministers and delegates took turns shaking hands and hugging Tedros, who has led the UN agency through turbulent times dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jakarta, Kabar Medsos – Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus terpilih lagi sebagai Direktur Jenderal (Dirjen) Organisasi Kesehatan Dunia (WHO).
Anggota WHO mempercayakan kembali posisi tersebut selama lima tahun mendatang kepada Tedros dalam pemungutan suara pada Selasa (24/5).
Diberitakan AFP, hasil tersebut diumumkan Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh dari Djibouti dalam pertemuan tahunan besar. Pengumuman itu dipandang sebagai acara formalitas sebab Tedros menjadi satu-satunya kandidat yang mencalonkan diri.
“Saya benar-benar bersyukur atas dukungan iniujar kata Tedros kepada majelis setelah kembali terpilih.
“Pengakuan itu bukan hanya untuk saya. Saya percaya itu adalah pengakuan untuk seluruh keluarga WHO. Saya sangat bangga menjadi WHO,” ucapnya.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus merupakan orang Afrika pertama yang mengepalai WHO dan kini kembali terpilih. Ia pun kini semakin dikenal dunia karena mempelopori respons global terhadap pandemi Covid-19.
Mantan menteri kesehatan dan luar negeri Ethiopia ini juga kerap merespons konflik, seperti perang di Ukraina yang berdampak pada kesehatan global.
“Lebih daripada pandemi, perang mengguncang dan menghancurkan fondasi di mana masyarakat yang sebelumnya stabil berdiri,” ujar Tedros.
“Dan itu meninggalkan bekas luka psikologis yang bisa memakan waktu bertahun-tahun atau puluhan tahun untuk sembuh,” katanya.
Melalui acara pengumuman pemilihan kembali, para menteri dan delegasi bergiliran berjabat tangan dan memeluk Tedros yang telah memimpin badan PBB itu melalui masa bergejolak yang didominasi oleh pandemi COVID-19.
